RSS feed ad blockers

April 28, 2005

I guess this was inevitable – RSS client ad blockers. (From Randy)

As a marketer, I’ve been fascinated to watch the fast development of new models around capitalizing on RSS feeds as a demand gen channel. From dedicated ad posts (or feed spam ), to Adsense within content posts (which this tool blocks), to the idea of creating distinct ad-only feeds loaded with value to the point that people actually subscribe, as Doc Searls suggests (lost the link), there is a ton of innovation happening.

Purists may cry foul, but for RSS to truly catch fire among content providers, there needs to be a way to monetize the feeds.

Maybe blockers like this, assuming they catch on, just mean things like Google Adsense in RSS go the way of pop-up ads. Whatever the case, another interesting innovation, and one more trend to track.
