Live blogging Julie Leung’s presentation – Gnomedex
This is really one I’ve been looking fwd to, ever since we swapped comments on our blogs awhile back. That and everyone I talk with speaks so highly of her presentation. Plus, my wife should appreciate this one as she’s supposed to discuss the intersection between personal life and personal blogs. What’s private, what’s to share?
Neat question – are we wearing masks when we blog. Consciously or unconsciously, are we playing a role via a blog that does not represent the genuine us, but rather the one we want the world to see?
“Just a few hundred pixels on the screen can dramatically change what people think about you.” – Scoble
I love how her “deck” is entirely a photo story.
Anything you put online lives forever, is searchable by anyone, can end up in print in front of the world. She got profiled in a local paper, which changed how she considers what to post and what to leave private.
Back to authenticity – in our efforts to be authentic, are we really just putting on airs?
It is a great question, compounded by fears of privacy about your family.
Anonymity is an option, but no guarantee. Where’s the balance?
Seesaw as a really cool metaphor for blogging – both the balance of authenticity vs privacy, and just play.
“You don’t want your family to feel they are fodder for your blog.”
“Even though I am trying to be transparent, not everything needs to be captured or posted.”
Just showed a Channel 9 Guy head on a foosball table. Nice.
“Do you want that associated with your name on Google” – sage words of warning.
Interesting – she doesn’t post pictures of her childrens faces.
Nice wrap up back to the death of her brother – should she blog about holding her brother’s ashes. powerful.
“Blogging is a giant collaborative cultural autobiography.” – I love this quote…note to self, email Julie to get the complete quote and author.
Again, use of the photos as her backdrop is powerful. Completely blows away any use of slides, for this end at least. Fantastically descriptive and illuminating.
Damn, this is good. Hits home. Get the podcast (?) at 10:42 am to retrieve her quote on finding your voice, discovering who you are and what you are meant to do.
She shared online her struggles with infertility. Not sure I would have made a leap into privacy to that end.
“If we are willing to make what is private public, we will learn we are not alone.” – Julie
Just showed a picture of baby hospital admittance/security bracelets – one each attached to her baby’s leg, and her and her husbands wrists. Having just been there, too cute.
wow…most powerful presentation of the conference. A touch of the personal in a day full of the technical. Nice work to Pirillo and Ponzi for making this a part of the event.
[audience comments - Winer is commenting on the trepidation of when his mom started blogging. I can relate... :-) ]
