I had actually had a moment of social media overload this morning when I took inventory of what I’m signed up for…some of this stuff has the addictive qualities of crack, I’ll admit.

The other day I fired up a Tumblr account after seeing a few nice examples around the Web. The rationale being, it could be a cool place to park those random quotes, photos, or videos I run across and want to save or share, but aren’t really worthy of a blog post and don’t quite fit in a Tweet.

So now I have a place with post small and likely pointless snippets, a place to wax on about the minutia of my life, and another spot to ramble out somewhat more lengthly thoughts, all with RSS feeds of course. And let’s not forgot a social spot for posting and sharing my photos, a couple or three social networks each with comments or messages, and the odd side blog project or discussion forum I tend to frequent. You can see most of my activity on my lifestream no less (or, of course, this version of the same).

It’s a lot of social media to incorporate into the day to day of one’s life, especially when balanced up against a full time job and a way-more-than-full home life.

Could I drop one or more (or most?) and still be a full participant online in the conversations I want to be part of?

Absolutely. In fact, I doubt the Tumblr site will survive the end of the year. But would I continue to enjoy as much my small daily moments of geeky oversharing on a reduced diet of social media? Probably not, so I’ll try not to get too hasty in scaling anything back. In fact, perhaps I’ll go try our Pownce while we’re on the subject…
