New Mechwarrior coming to PC? Yeah baby!
MechWarrior Project [rumored] at IGN.com
Only a few family and friends really know this, but I have been a lifelong Battletech and Mechwarrior geek. From buying every sourcebook and desktop RPG I could find as a kid at my local Cosmic Comics (on the old Murphy Street in Sunnyvale) to religiously playing the PC games the moment the released, I’ve loved the stuff. The Inner Sphere backstory, the fiction, the awesome level of detail about the units and personalities…and of course, the walking mountains of destruction known as BattleMechs. All of it is just a fantastic fictional universe with 1,000 stories still waiting to be told.
Like most fans, the apparent demise of the PC game series after MechWarrior 4 was last released by Microsoft years ago, left me mourning. Don’t talk about the MechAssault XBOX games – they’re not nearly the same. I contented myself to endless replays of the expansion packs, hoping they would continue to work on new OS’s and PC hardware over the years.
So I’m downright giddy at the idea that Smith & Tinkler, a local company headed by the founder of FASA, Jordan Weisman, is leading the charge for an all new PC game release to relaunch, in effect, the MechWarrior series.
An early concept video is above – as Scrapyard Armory points out, it’s not in-game footage and likely is mostly intended to attract the interest of publishing houses, but hell, I’ll take it. A catastrophic urban 1v1 between a Warhammer and Atlas Prime. Yeah baby!!

Even better, the new game is apparently set in the year 3015, meaning it predates all the recent marginally crappy developments in the game, from Clans to Word of Blake to wild ass new technology. I love the “old” era of endless, pointless combat during the Succession Wars – just a non-stop slog of shit blowing up on a routine basis. So many untold stories and game scenarios without the pollution of all the later canon.
Wow, I’m getting jitters just writing this. C’mon Smith & Tinkler, find yourself a publisher and make this happen! I’m ready to pre-order! Oh, and get a “Mercenaries”-style expansion pack in the works fast, mmkay?
